In 2024, Apple opened its first data center at the Waukee campus in Iowa. The construction in Waukee has been long delayed and finally was restarted in 2022.

Apple plans to build two "state-of-the-art" data centers on a 2,000-acre portion of a 3,500-acre site Waukee annexed in June. Owned by 28 property owners, the annexed land spans about one mile north and one mile south of Hickman Road. The annexation was part of the city's plan to expand west, but was accelerated with Apple's project. Des Moines Register

State and Local Incentives

State and local officials awarded Apple more than $213 million in incentives, including:

  • $19.65 million in state investment tax credits awarded by the Iowa Economic Development Authority;
  • A 71 percent property tax abatement over 20 years approved by the Waukee City Council ― an incentive worth $188,239,943, according to state records; including tax abatement and water and sewer infrastructure improvements, this will total $194,234,943.

In exchange, Apple will provide $500,000 per data center building per year to a public improvement fund for use by Waukee "until certain maximum contributions are made." That total has been announced at $100 million.

Apple plans a total of 6 data center buildings on the campus:

Apple's Move to Renewable Energy

In 2010, Apple reported that just 16% of its total facilities were powered by renewables. Within just six years, that number skyrocketed up to 96% in 2016. In 2018, Apple said that it has achieved 100% renewable energy. Source: cleantechnica.com.

As of early 2018, Apple had 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, totaling 626 MW of generation capacity. Notably, 286 MW of solar PV generation came online in 2017. There are 15 more projects under construction that represent over 1.4 GW of renewable energy generation across 11 countries.

In Prineville, Ore., the Apple signed a 200 MW power purchase agreement for an Oregon wind farm, the Montague Wind Power Project, set to come online by the end of 2019.

Apple’s data center in Maiden, N.C., is supported by projects that generate 244 million kWh of renewable energy per year, which is equivalent to the energy used by 17,906 North Carolina homes.
